Emergency alerts

One alert. Every screen, every phone, every inbox.

Organizations that use Signaige can put an emergency message on their screens and, at the same moment, send it by text message and email to the people who chose to receive it. When the situation is over, one "All clear" ends it everywhere.

Not a replacement for 911. Emergency alerts add to, and do not replace, official emergency services and public warning systems. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.

How an organization sends an alert

From a phone or a computer

A person the organization has allowed to send alerts opens the Emergency alerts page, chooses where (everywhere, or chosen channels) and what (Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter in place, Fire, Severe weather, All clear, or the organization's own message), picks which groups to notify, then presses and holds the send button. Letting go early cancels it.

Automatic weather alerts

A channel can show US National Weather Service warnings for its location automatically, filtered by severity and event type, and remove them when the warning ends.

From another system

A fire panel or mass-notification system can raise and clear alerts through a secret webhook address, in JSON or CAP 1.2.

An emergency alert takes priority over an automatic weather alert, which takes priority over a regular live override. When an alert ends, the screens go back to what they were showing.

What organizations send

The program is for safety messages only. Typical messages are:

  • Lockdown or shelter in place
  • Evacuation or fire
  • Severe weather warnings
  • Other urgent safety instructions
  • The "All clear" when the situation is over

Each alert is sent by the organization the person signed up with (for example, their school or employer), using Signaige. No marketing or promotional messages are sent through this program.

How people sign up for text alerts

Nobody receives alert texts without asking for them. Each organization that offers text alerts has its own public sign-up page. Its address is the organization's Signaige address followed by /alerts/join, for example signaige.ai/your-organization/alerts/join. Organizations share that link with their own people, for example by email, on their intranet or on a poster.

  1. Fill in the sign-up form. The page asks for a name and mobile number (email is optional) and, next to an unticked consent box, says what the person is agreeing to: emergency and safety alerts from that organization by text, message frequency varies, message and data rates may apply, reply STOP to opt out and HELP for help.
  2. Tick the consent box and submit. The box is never pre-ticked.
  3. Confirm by text. We send one text asking the person to reply YES. No alert is texted until that YES arrives.

The confirmation text reads like this:

SignAIge emergency alerts from Organization: reply YES to confirm you want emergency and safety alerts by text. Msg frequency varies. Msg&data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.

An organization may also add people it already has a relationship with, such as its staff, to its contact list. Text alerts still go only to numbers that confirmed with YES.

Stopping alerts and getting help

  • Reply STOP to any alert text to stop receiving texts. You will get one confirmation that you have been unsubscribed and nothing more.
  • Reply START to the same number to sign up again after replying STOP.
  • Reply HELP for help, or contact us.

Message frequency varies with emergencies. Message and data rates may apply. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

Read the full SMS Terms and our Privacy Policy. Mobile numbers and consent are never sold or shared for marketing.
